Colour blocking

It's day 3 of the A to Z blogging challenge and I'm starting to think that I need a new writing strategy; I'm spending far too long looking at lovely clothes and am running out of time to write the actual posts! I've really enjoyed writing this one, though. There's so much colour around in shops at the moment and I love it. It's really easy to slip into wearing black when the weather starts turning but we're being challenged this year to put away the 'Melbourne uniform' of black and branch out. So be bold!

So...C is for Colour blocking! It’s everywhere at the moment in numerous shapes and forms and is a really simple look to create.

There are lots of colour-blocked knit dresses and jumpers around, like this one from Country Road, that would go nicely with a pair of brightly coloured jeans or trousers.

You can also create your own blocking by wearing two or more items of solid colour. I’ve got a bright green skirt that I wear with a cream top, fuchsia pumps and a navy cropped blazer, which is one of my favourite looks at the moment. This is a really good way to play with colour because you can dress according to your mood: try dark, neutral tones like khaki, plum and navy for a wintry look or orange, pink and royal blue for a more striking look.

It's  a SUPER easy one for guys to pull off this trend as well. There are loads of brands stocking chinos and jeans in bold colours but go with what you feel comfortable in. Team a pair with a grey or beige sweater and a blue blazer for a winning smart-casual look.

And don't be afraid to experiment! It can be as basic as a blue belt with black trousers. The possibilities are endless!

Have you been working the colour-block trend? What items do you use to create the look?

  1. I really need to keep this in mind this year. Gotta get out of the black and grey! At least a little.

  2. I am really loving the color block trend... I love the look of colored jeans paired with a bright clutch or shoes.

    1. I really liked your post on mint-coloured trousers the other day, Leanne. I'm all about colour at the moment!

  3. I've been noticing a big color-blocking trend this year, but I can't say I'm really loving it. As is true so often in fashion, it seems to take a tall, lean body to really make this work well.

    1. It's definitely a little harder if you're not that body shape. You just need to make sure you dress for your shape and wear pieces that flatter your best features.
