L is for Leggings are not pants

I know this is a contraversial subject but I couldn't help putting my two cents in.

I'm a firm believer that leggings are great workout attire but they have no place masquerading as trousers. They are not trousers, they're leggings. It's becoming more and more common to see girls - and women - out in public wearing leggings as trousers without even having the decency to layer a long tunic over the top to cover their behind. I just don't get it. The material is concerningly thin and they leave NOTHING to the imagination, so why are women so confident about going outside in them?

Even worse than leggings; Annalynne McCord in jeggings

It seems I'm not alone in my opinion, either. Mia Freedman wrote a great piece earlier this year about an interesting conversation she had with her 5-year-old daughter, which I found particularly entertaining (especially when I read the caviat the Mia had to put at the end after receiving so many aggravated responses!). Don't get me wrong, I think leggings are a great wardrobe item and can be very chic when done well - say, under a knit dress or a long top with boots in winter - and I practically live in them when I'm running in the colder months,  but the majority of women who don them nowadays haven't just come from the gym and don't bother with the long-top-to-cover-the-arse caper.

These outfits are just screaming out for a mini skirt to me.

That said, I think leather pants are a different kettle of fish because they have at least a bit of rigidity and thickness to them, thus making them more flattering pants.

Leather trousers

Are you in favour of wearing leggings as trousers, or do you share my point of view about the controversial wardrobe item?

  1. Yep. Leggings are not pants, especially if you're packing a few extra kilos. I actually almost don't mind Hilary Duff's outfit above, if her cardi was maybe a squidge longer. I'm not a fan of J-Lo and Gwyneth's leather pants above, but the other two look good.

  2. I agree 100% with you, especially when they are 5 sizes too small and it's not the leggins fault! Found you A to Z
